Some say the "One Minute Commercial" is dead, others swear by it. Whatever you call it, it’s a necessary job search tool. Not for the potential employer, but for YOU! Think about it. Can you effortlessly tell people what you do for a living? Or what you want to do for a living? If you are unable to explain in about a minute, you’ll lose your audience to the drone of your own voice.

When the comment “Tell me about yourself,” is asked (and it WILL be asked at most interviews) the interviewer doesn’t want to know that you have 5 children, a deadbeat partner and a car that won’t start. Don’t even go there. They want to know about your transferable skills and abilities. They want to know what you can bring to their company. They want to know what kind of employee you will be if they hire you. They want to know about your work experience and educational background. And, they want you to tell them in one minute (or less).

So, to get started, I’ve written some examples to help you create and write your own “One Minute Commercial” or, as some have described the, “Tell me about yourself,” script. This is not the time to be a braggart. Make sure that what you put together is truthful, not boastful, legitimate, not phony and sincere, not hypocritical.

Once you’ve got it on paper, it’s time to read it out loud. Do it again and again. Time it and practice, practice, practice. Don’t exceed a one minute time limit, and don’t sound like a robot. It should flow from you. Use an enthusiastic voice, positive body language and genuine honesty about what you can bring to your potential employer’s table. Say it so often it becomes second nature. Say it like you believe it:
