Take Steps

Informational interviews begin with you. Select the position you desire. Do you have a career you're interested in? Have a hobby that can be taken professional? These questions and more will point you to the position.

Companies that create the product or service you wish to gain an informational interview with can be found online, at libraries & in the white pages. Through the position or service you can target those companies. Create a list of the top 10.

The list of the 10 companies is your launch pad. There is good old fashioned hard work that will have to be applied. Reading, writing and note taking will be required. It's doing your homework on the companies to find the divisions, events or news that can lead you into a company.

Use friends, family, colleagues, fellow students, alumni or any other group that maybe connected. It's uncanny how closely connected with all are, especially if the company is a large employer in the state or area.

Anyone you contact should be researched. These contacts can give you a direct line of communication with the company with your interest. Make sure that before you contact anyone you've written questions and answered, "What do I want to know and what do I need to get in order to move closer to the informational interview?"
