Take Steps

Scheduling an informational interview can be as difficult as a job interview. It's important to view this as an opportunity to practice landing an actual job interview. The same techniques will be required to land an interview for a position.

To contact a person it's best to use a letter, phone call or email. Formal is always best. Write a formal email, have people check it, review & rewrite. This will ensure that you catch any possible problems in the letter. Write out the phone call as a script before you call too.

It's imperative that you contact the person who you want to interview or someone who can connect you with them. You must use the target list of companies to pick the department you'd like to learn more about. From there it's simply picking a point person who becomes your target.

Multiple connections to the person will be needed. You will need to call them, follow up on the call, write an email and maybe even fax a funny cartoon for attention. People who work for companies now have more responsibilities and less time so don't expect the first attempt to work perfectly.

Using these ideas you can begin contacting the company. That is where the real work comes into play. You will develop questions, ideas and see if the company is right for you through the research.
