If you’ve been at the job search for a while now and the results you want aren’t materializing, then maybe it’s time to challenge yourself, reorganize the work hunt, and get closer to the results you desire. Challenges can motivate you into getting some hard work done - with some contagious results.
This challenge creates the principle of becoming your own boss. Most bosses are a good thing as they keep tasks in motion, check progress, and give suggestions to ensure jobs are completed in a timely manner. Since the job search has no boss, you must learn to be your own boss and now is the time to raise employee expectations. For instance, if you hired someone to find a job for you, working 8 hours a day, 5 days per week, you would (or should) review their performance. There is no difference with your own job search work. You are now your own boss. Start acting like it!
Compete with yourself every day. Once you know there is an opportunity, create realistic goals for your job search progress. Keep a tally of what’s done each week, setting new goals for the following week. When you achieve your specific goals, make sure to reward yourself. There is no point challenging yourself if you aren’t rewarded. And every good boss knows how to reward his/her employees. So, take a day off, see a movie or treat yourself to some ice cream - any little pick-me-up will do. Not only will this help to keep you motivated, it’s great way to step back, take a breather, and objectively review how much work you’ve done to get hired - just like a real boss would in your job! At day’s end, you’ll see what you’ve accomplished and you’ll find ways to improve the way you use your time.
Now, when you become employed, challenging yourself at work will be easy, and it can show the boss you are a very reliant worker who is self-motivated and can self-evaluate. That makes it a much more pleasant environment for your boss, which will hopefully help them (and you) to be less stressed.
