By Mary Elizabeth Bradford, "The Career Artisan." - Career marketing expert and nationally certified advanced resume writer.

When I ask my clients to give me success stories of their various career achievements I often hear the following comments:

I can’t really quantify my successes
It’s just my job
I don’t think of myself in that way
I can’t recall accomplishments “like that”
It’s really hard for me to give you that information

Can you relate? It's okay first of all – you see, you are not alone!

But I will let you in on a secret: there is a simple trick to recalling and creating your accomplishments and once you master this little technique you too can create “jaw-dropping” accomplishments that will have potential employers really excited to talk with you!

Jaw-dropping? The information was fine as far as it went, but the article did not included any jaw-dropping examples. Is the emphasis on spinning the accomplishments to seem larger than life?

What seems most important to employers is the date of my gradulation from high school. The requirement is on nearly every application. It is an easy way to determine age within a year or two.

Hi John,

Thank you for your comments! I wanted to take this opportunity to personally share a couple things with you:

First, I don’t know how old you are or what type of jobs you are applying for. But standard applications are going to always ask you the basic questions. This includes when you graduated and doesn’t have anything to do with this topic.

This topic - creating amazing career accomplishments is absolutely not about "spinning" your accomplishments. It is about your attitude. How you see yourself, your accomplishments and how to craft them in a way that clearly communicates your value. Value for most every employer means basically one thing - harsh as it may sound: can you help make us money?

Understanding and communicating your value is one of the hardest things for professionals to do in many cases and for many reasons. Sometimes we feel that "it's just what I do" - so that’s what gets communicated.

For example: I write resumes. There are many resume writers. So what?

I bet what YOU want to know is: "okay Mary Elizabeth - what happens when you write my resume? How can you help me make money (via a job)?" In which case I can share with you all the BENEFITS that my clients get like bigger offers, a shorter job search and securing interviews for better quality jobs - that improves your quality of life and ultimately allows me to help you get what you want. That is what you want to know, right? Well, that’s why you need to understand how to write and communicate your career accomplishments. And this article demonstrates step by step - how you can do that yourself if you try. A willingness to learn and a positive attitude plus the right strategies will help you throughout your whole career.

I hope that helps you!
