To put it simply, the word "networking" boils down to talking one-on-one with others. You never know if the next person you meet will be your contact for landing your next job. However, networking meetings are (typically) informal gatherings at a coffee shop, someone's home, church, business or restaurant. It doesn't really matter where you meet, as long as you make a consistent effort to participate. There are certain aspects of networking that make it work. Showing up is crucial. Sharing your story with others is what it's all about.

At a recent networking meeting, they introduced the "Cookie Testimonial." While sharing cookies and coffee, "Dean Johnson"* stood up to talk about his job loss experience. The first time he lost his job, he was out of work for "only" 5-1/2 months. It was quite a bit longer the second time around as he explained during his Cookie Testimonial:

"If you would have seen me just one year ago, I would have looked very different. A head of gray hair, 16 pounds heavier and telling everyone that networking just doesn't work. Well, guess what? I had to eat those words because after being out of work for the past 10-1/2 months, I found my latest job through networking!"

It may have helped that Dean dyed his hair and started running three miles a day. He told his networking group that he felt really good emotionally, spiritually, and physically. By keeping a positive attitude and staying in good shape, Dean increased his chances of landing a great job with a good company. But it wasn't easy.

After contacting over 81 companies, attending over 150 networking meetings, and going through 52 actual interviews, he still wasn't working. His big break came, not in a networking meeting, but when he was talking with an old high school buddy.

"I mentioned my job search and he knew of an opening in his company. The company hadn't even advertised the open position, but I got an interview through my friend. After one month and four interviews, I landed the job of District Manager over four states!"

Dean credits his good fortune to his continued efforts at networking and in keeping a positive attitude. "Everyday I would read off of a card on which I had written positive affirmations." Some of them included:

  • I'm in charge of my life
  • I am fantastic
  • I am unique and valuable
  • I am full of life and glad to be alive
  • I like who I am

Dean thanked all of the people who had helped him throughout his job search, including all of his friends at his networking meeting. He learned that even though jobs don't come easy, networking friends do. Most importantly, he found out that networking works!

*Not his real name.
